Our South Brittany gite is located in Audierne in the Finistere region of Brittany, France.
Medieval towns and cities pepper the countryside. The exquisite medieval city of Quimper, the capital of the ancient kingdom of Cornouaille, with its renowned cathedral is a 30 minute drive away.
Pont Croix is a delightful midieval town less than an hours' walk just up the Goyen River along an easy foot path.
Benodet and Pont-Aven, nicknamed "City of Painters", both popular holiday destinations, are only a short drive away.
Locronan, one of the most beautiful villages in France (featured in many films, including Roman Polanski's Tess) is also just a stone's throw away.
At Primelin, 3km west of Audierne is the beautiful Chapelle de St-Tugen, built in 1535. While the nave and the square tower are both in te Flamboyant Gothic style, the transept and apse date from the Renaissance.
The Goyen estuary, with its boat cemetery and its wooden cast, offers you some nice walks.
Take a trips out to sea in a traditional lobster boat or take the ferry around the Pointe du Raz to Île de Sein. Setting off to reach the island on a misty morning feels as though you're sailing off the edge of the world. There are no cars on the island, and even bicycles are not permitted. Nowhere does it rise more than six metres above the surrounding ocean.
The Pointe de la Torche at the Southern end of the Bay of Audierne is a world-class surfing beach.
Boating and all things maritime flourish here with an annual tall boat regatta between Douarnenez and Brest as well as many other regattas and festivals. Water sports flourish particularly in the summer months, sailing, wind-surfing and world-class surfing.
