Holiday Cottage Brittany - The Town

Our holiday cottage in Brittany is located in The Town which lies on a sheltered bay at the mouth of the Goyen River. Audierne is a fishing village with large sand beaches.

Still not a major tourist destination, it is an ideal place to witness an unspoilt Brittany port.

It is still actively involved in the fishing industry and its restaurants are full of France’s freshest fish. Specialties include such highly prized fish as sea bream and monkfish, sea bass, prawns and crayfish. Bring fresh sea food back to your holiday cottage directly from the wharfside or from the marvelous fish market.

Take a trips out to sea in a traditional lobster boat or take the ferry around the Pointe du Raz and its lighthouses to Île de Sein.

Holiday Cottage Brittany - Our Local Beach

Lose yourself in its tiny back streets, The picturesque white houses with brightly coloured shutters will enchant you. In la rue de l’Amiral Guépratte, go into La Chaumière – a thatched house which has kept all of its 17th century furnishings, where locals will explain old traditions and objects to you. It’s a museum, officially, but it doesn’t seem like one.

Along the harbour stretches the town's main shopping area with its cafés, bars and restaurants, crêperies, boutiques, the town hall, the tourism office, and a movie theatre.

Saturday and Wednesday mornings there is a farmers' market, where you can browse the stalls for local specialties to bring back to your self-catering holiday cottage.

Holiday Cottage Brittany - The Bar de la Mer

At the inland end of town, a new aquarium holds tankfuls of mostly local fish, captioned as ever with the stress on gastronomy – "the flesh is firm and much enjoyed" – and captive cormorants and gulls put on regular aerobatic displays.

From the town centre, the road continues just over 1km to the long, curving, sheltered beach of Ste-Evette. Other beaches are even closer to the holiday cottage. Hiking paths hug the coastline for miles.

Audierne is twinned with Penryn, Cornwall.
